Take any popular fruity wine and check out the back label.
Just because the label says “natural flavors” doesn’t mean you’re getting that fruity flavor from the actual fruit.
So What Does “Natural Flavors” Mean?
Natural flavor is listed as an ingredient on all kinds of products such as wine, soda, breakfast cereals, candy, and even plant-based meat.
But what exactly goes into making these natural flavorings?
The term natural flavor or natural flavoring is defined by the FDA as:
“a substance extracted, distilled, or similarly derived from natural sources like plants (fruits, herbs, veggies, barks, roots, etc.) or animals (meat, dairy products, eggs, etc.) via a method of heating, with its primary function in food being flavoring not nutritional.”
Wait, what?!
What is flavor?
Flavor is made of molecules. Each flavor we taste is made of molecules.
But don’t let science freak you out.
Everything is made of molecules
—
That includes your dog, your favorite shirt, and that special coffee mug
You're made of molecules
—
For example, the human body alone is made up of 75% water– or the H20 molecule?
Did you know?
—
A single raspberry is made up of around 250 to 300 molecules
How is flavor made?
Flavor is made in a lab. By a flavorist. A flavorist is a part-chemist and part-artist with a strong scientific background and a creative flair that allows them to imagine new ways we can experience flavors in both expected and unexpected ways.
Creating a natural flavor is done according to regulations, ensuring every ingredient used is considered safe. For example, a natural flavored raspberry soda has “raspberry essences that create the raspberry flavor,” but does not contain all-natural raspberry fruit.
If you had the choice of something made in a lab or something made in nature, which would you choose?
So, what’s in my wine???
